Forts & Palaces of Rajasthan

Overlooking the Delhi Jaipur Highway, the image of the Amber Fort is beautifully reflected in the lake below. Within the Fort lies the famous Jai Mandir (Temple) with its world renowned Sheesh Mahal, a hall full of Mirrors.
The walls and the ceiling of the Mahal are covered with a beautiful array of mirrors, which reflect any streak of light, so as to illuminate the entire room. Located 9 Kms north west of Jaipur, the Amber Fort was once the Capital of the Minas.

The capital city of Rajasthan was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II an 1727 A.D. Washed in Pink, Jaipur displays a remarkable harmony and architectural grandeur. The Pink city endorses palaces, rustic fortresses nestled on barren hills. Jaipur is the only planned city designed on Shilpa Shastra.

Lake Palace, Udaipur (Rajasthan, India) is in fact a white marble palace that seems to float miraculously on the still waters of Lake Pichola. Probably the most romantic hotel in the world, this 250-year old palace offers guests a unique blend of serenity and opulence.
Udaipur, the famed 'city of sunrise', was founded in 1567 by Maharana Udai Singh, a fearless Rajput king. This languid lake city with its fantasies in marble, picturesque hibiscus-covered gardens and elaborate fountain pavilions, embodies the glory of the Rajputera.

Jaisalmer like other towns of Rajasthan is centered around a fort - the Jaisalmer Fort which is popularly referred to as Sonar Quila. The majestic fort is located to the south of Jaisalmer on the picturesque Trikut hill. The length of the fort is 457 meter and the breadth is 229 meters.
The Fort was built in 1156 and is one of the oldest forts in Rajasthan rising as it does like a mirage from the surrounding deserts. The Fort was built by Maharaja Jaisal who had the desire to set up a new capital since the former one located at Lodurva was susceptible to enemy incursions.

Located 64 kms north of Udaipur in the wilderness, Kumbhalgarh is the second most important citadel after Chittorgarh in the Mewar region. Cradled in the Aravali Ranges the fort was built in the 15th century by Rana Kumbha. Because of its inaccessibility and hostile topography the fort had remained un-conquered.

The majestic Mehrangarh Fort is one of India's largest forts and located in the picturesque city of Jodhpur. The work of building the fort originally commenced in 1459 on the behest of the founder of Jodhpur - Rao Jodha but much of the fort as it stands today was built in the era of Jaswant Singh. This magnificent fort is spread over 5 kms. and is located on top of a hill which is all of 125 meters high.

Junagarh Fort of Bikaner was built by Raja Rai Singh, one of the most able and trusted generals of Akbar, in 1587. The fort is surrounded by a high wall and deep moats. There are 37 bastions guarding the fort with only two gates as the entrance pathway to the fort, the main one being the Suraj Pol or the Sun Gate. The Junagarh Fort has yet been unconquered excepting the brief victory of Kamaran, which he could not retain for more than 24 hours.

The magnificent Chittorgarh fort located 175 kms. east of Udaipur is dedicated to Chitrangad Maurya Bappa Rawal who was the founder of the Sisodia dynasty. The fort is spread over 700 acres and houses regal palaces, temples and towers. This fort is rated as the foremost in embattlement tactics and is among the most impregnable forts ever built by the Rajputs.
