Festivals of Rajasthan

The ancient town of Pushkar is transformed into a spectacular fair ground in the month of Kartik ( Hundu Month ) Oct./nov.. The fair attracts a great number of tourist from far and wide. The fair grounds revererate with festivity, as rows of make shift stalls display a bewildering array of items that compete with each other for the visitors attention. But the hightlight of Pushkar Fair is the trading in Camels bought, sold, decked up and paraded on the sand dunes, presenting a picturesque sight.

Jaisalmer exercise immense charm, but with the staging of the annual Desert Festival (January - February), it has also become one of the more important events on the annual calendar. Essentially, it is a showcase of the performing arts of the region on the stretching sands around this desert citadel. A number of amusing turban tying competitions and camel races.

The Gangaur Festival is the most important local festival of Rajasthan and is observed throughout the state with great fervour and devotion by womenfolk who worship Gauri, the consort of Lord Shiva.
Gan is a synonym for Shiva and Gaur, which stands for Gauri or Parvati who symbolises 'saubhagya' (marital bliss). Gauri is the embodiment of perfection and conjugal love, which is why the unmarried women worship her for being blessed with good husbands, while married women do so for the welfare, health and long life of their spouses and a happy married and long life of their life.

The Camel Festival is an event organized in Bikaner by the Department of Tourism, Art and Culture, Government of Rajasthan, every year in the month of January. Desert region's Folk dances and Music, add on to what is otherwise an exclusive camel affair. A festival when the ships of the desert are seen at their best. Camels fascinate tourists from all over the world with their movements, charm and grace. A spectacle of unusual camel performances: camel races, camel dances, and the bumpy, neck shaking camel rides.

The Mewar Festival is celebrated to welcome the advent of spring. It coincides with the festival of Gangaur in Udaipur and has a unique charm about it. The festival of Gangaur is very significant for women of Rajasthan. It is a time for them to dress up in their best clothes and participate in the festival.

Held during the monsoons, July-August Teej is also dedicated to Lord Shiva and Parvati and this time it is married women who pray for a happy and long married life. Though celebrations are held all over the state, it is particularly colorful in Jaipur where a procession winds its way for two days through the Old City. It is the festival of swings which are decorated with flowers and hung from trees. Young girls and women dressed in green clothes sing songs in celebration of the advent of the monsoon. The Teej idol is covered with a canopy whereas the Gangaur idol is open.

The variety of fairs and festivals in Rajasthan impart a characteristic charm to this desert state that has for long generated a lot of interest in the minds of the tourists who have a proclivity for delving deep into the rich history and culture of the place. Urs in Ajmer is a popular festival in Rajasthan that is informed with a serious religious tinge. Urs in Ajmer is held in the honor of the venerated Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti. Urs, Ajmer takes place yearly during the first six days of the seventh month of the Islamic calendar.
