About Periyar

Periyar is better known for the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve in Thekkady. Situated high in the ranges of the Western Ghats, the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the 16 Project Tiger Reserves in India. At the heart of the sanctuary is the picturesque Periyar Lake , a major attraction of the region. Formed with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir provides continuous water for the local wildlife. Periyar Wildlife Reserve is one of the few places where you can observe elephants in their natural habitats.

The lush green forest of Periyar has a beautiful lake right at the center, which meanders along the contours of the wooded slopes, serving as a perennial source of water for the wildlife population. Teeming with wild elephants, Periyar is one of the most captivating wildlife parks in the world, where you can witness herds of playful elephants roaming freely or bathing and swimming at the Periyar Lake.

The population of tigers at Periyar is also on the rise, and these tigers, along with the some elusive species like Nilgiri tahrs (a kind of a wild goat), form an integral part of the various tourist attractions in Periyar.

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is also home to a wide variety of other animals like leopard, wild dog, barking deer, mouse deer, Nilgiri langur (a primate), bonnet macaque, sambhar, porcupines, squirrels, gaur (Indian bison), wild boar and sloth bear.

Other tourist attractions in Periyar include several species of birds and reptiles. Cormorants, Darters, Kingfishers, great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongos are some of the birds that can be spotted here. The reptiles frequenting Periyar include Monitor Lizards, Python and Cobra.
